Confusion strikes again through conflicting information
Very recently, I read the opinion that Mindfulness doesn’t need Meditation. Initially, my heckles were raised, and my indignant response was to curse all the damned confusion being spread at this time. Hardly a non-judgemental reaction.
On reflection, though, I’ve come to realise that, in a sense, we can become more mindful without practising meditation. If we’re focused on what we’re doing, from moment to moment, with the exclusion of all other things, then we are being mindful. But this isn’t the whole story. Not by a long stretch.
Mindfulness naturally begets more mindfulness
The thing to consider is how learning the discipline of Meditation, before, and alongside, Mindfulness helps us to strengthen the mind. We’re then better equipped at creating powerful anchors (discussed in detail on Meditation to Mindfulness Workshops) to restoring the mind, back to the present moment.
The mind of a practising Meditator will have a greater fitness
Improving our Mental Fitness is a must. The fitter our mind, the easier it will be for us to raise our awareness, to everyday thoughts and behaviour. Also, the fitter/stronger the mind, the less forgetful and absentminded it will be. Compartmentalisation also becomes far easier through mindfulness skills.
To conclude. Mindfulness is something we can all become better at simply through raising our awareness through focus and improved concentration.
Let there be no confusion, though. Learning and regularly practising the skill of Meditation creates powerful anchors that help us to bring the mind back to the present. Meditation is the tool that strengthens the mind, improving our ability to concentrate and focus.
To me, as a result of my personal experience, Meditation & Mindfulness work hand in hand. One leading to another. They are beautifully intertwined and, when practised together, become inseparable.
